As a writer/creator, something from my life inspires nearly all of my creations from standup jokes to scripts.
My experience with The Girls Next Door (TV show about Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends) led me to conclude that Hef is a genius. He took what men want (naked women) and made a magazine about it. So I started brainstorming what women’s fantasies are and I thought: Duh. Women want to be proposed to. I wrote and performed a standup piece about my fictitious magazine: Proposal Magazine.
The major premise of my magazine would have a Fiance of the Month, the parallel to the Playboy Playmate. It’d be a hot guy (clothed) proposing to the camera.
Anyway, after performing that joke a lot and having a sister who loves weddings, she and I decided to actually start Proposal Magazine. So we did.
We launched the site on January, 1, 2010 with our daily updates: A Social Tip of the Day and Today in Wedding History. February 1st was when we debuted our feature columns and Proposal of the Week Contest. Please check it out!
It feels a little weird becoming an expert in weddings, something that I was never really that into. But as a writer, I’m always trying to broaden my horizons.
The craziest thing to wrap my head around with all of this is that I took something from my life, it inspired my standup. Then my standup inspired my real life. Now that I’ve created this cycle of life breeding art, breeding life, then something artistic is on its way. I’m wondering what it will be.
